I don't know how we got so lucky, but for the biggest Ole Miss football game of the year (against Georgia), the girls didn't have a CBHS game on Friday night! We hightailed it to Oxford after school, and our friends came to join us after dinner. Town was NUTS and so crowded, so it was fun just to order pizza and watch the chaos unfold in our pjs.
The game was at 2:30 on Saturday (Nov 9), and the rain started around noon. While it varied from a drizzle to a downpour, it was doing something pretty much the entire rest of the day. We thought the game was off to a rough start when Georgia intercepted a pass and then scored within minutes, but we pulled it right back together and NEVER STOPPED! I mean, I still can't get over it- feels like a dream! With maybe about 7:00 minutes left in the game, I asked John what we would do if what we weren't going to talk about happening actually ended up happening. Wouldn't you know it but he was already hatching a plan of how we could get to the field and how we could stay together/ meet up if we got separated (but we weren't going to talk about it as in reality, of course). About 4:00 minutes left in the game, we started making our way downstairs, "just in case." We ended up winning 28 to 10, and WE STORMED THE FIELD. (Well, some ding dong college kids stormed too early and had to get back off for a few more seconds of play, but that WAS NOT US, for the record.)
In the fall of 2002, Ole Miss beat Florida, and John and I separately stormed the field but ran into each other out there. We had just recently met in grad school, weren't dating yet; it was so new and I felt awkward asking for a pic together (with my digital camera) so I chickened out. And I've regretted it for the last 22 years- until that night! Seeing our Rebs beat Georgia and storming the field with our baby girl and KK- CORE MEMORY. Thankful we weren't decapitated by the goal post (thanks, Katherine, for screaming, 'GET DOWN!'), but what a moment to be right in the middle of it together with dear friends and family!
