I've lived my whole life with my Bubba saying she wouldn't make it "to see the year 2000," "til I got married," "til she turned 90," etc. And we had come to believe she'd see 100 after turning 99 this past December, still living on her own, and having no major medical issues.
But in late January, she just got tired. She was content to lay on the couch all day, and she wasn't very interested in eating. That progressed to laying in the bed, then not getting up, and then not drinking either. We all had time to visit with her, to sit next to her bed and talk to her or hold her hand- until she'd tell us to leave her alone, that she'd like to go to sleep or to not hold her hand! (She was spunky until the end!) In my last (alert) conversation with her on Jan. 28th, I asked her if she'd be my girls' guardian angel, and she smiled and said, "I sure will!" And she said, "Come back to see me!"
She finally got to see Jesus' face on Feb. 8th, and what a reunion it was with her parents, sister, Popa Frank, and Jamin. We are all rocked to the core to have our last grandparent leave us, but how can we be greedy after having her for almost 42 years?! She was such a foundation of my childhood, as she hosted Sunday lunch and Easter egg hunts with all the cousins, took us camping in their RV, let us make a mess in her kitchen making Christmas cookies, and later she shared Delta Gamma traditions with me, went to lunch with me and my girls, and even took a nap on my couch this past Christmas. She told anyone she met how "blessed" she was, but we were the ones that were truly blessed to have her example of faith, loyalty, friendship, and generosity. Until I get to hug you again, Bubba, I'll do my best to live "my dash" to the fullest.
