Spring Break 2014: NYC

For Spring Break, Helen Grace, Granddaddy, Spiffer and I cashed in some Delta SkyMiles and headed to New York for a long weekend of fun (Wednesday-Sunday). The weather gods must have a sense of humor for Toohigs’ trips to NYC. The early part of the week was spring-ish, but the high on Thursday was 27 degrees. BRR. At least this time, I was more prepared with more layers. We made the best of it though by finding some indoor activities and eating a lot!

Here’s a look at Wednesday and Thursday…

Our fearless leader heading to the Memphis airport2014-03-12 10.20.08 We were routed through Detroit, but a snow storm changed our plans. We waited for six hours and hopped a plane to Atlanta. After much convincing, I finally got her to fall asleep for about 45 minutes in my lap.2014-03-12 12.59.31 FINALLY about to get on a plane and leave Memphis2014-03-12 15.28.01 Her first time to ride the tram in Atlanta’s airport2014-03-12 18.37.28 Leaving ATL and heading to NYC2014-03-12 20.11.40 Thursday morning view from Hilton Times Square. Highly recommend it.IMG_5523 Lunch at Shake Shack at 44th and 8th2014-03-13 11.25.21 A brisk walk through Central Park behind the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see Cleopatra’s Needle. “When I’m a Mama”

Helen Grace recently told me in the heat of a meltdown moment that when she was a mama, she’d let her kids do whatever they wanted to do. John later told me, “You should have gotten that on video for her rehearsal video!” Well, she gave me that opportunity a few days later. We will save this video for sure!

Toohig Tidbits

HG and I were playing school. I was the teacher, and she was a bad girl playing on the school's roof. I called the principal to fuss at her, but she wouldn't get down. I called a police man, a firefighter, and even Santa, and the bad girl still wouldn't get down. Exasperated, I said, "Well, who else is there to call if she won't even listen to Santa? Jesus?" "Mommy, Jesus doesn't have a phone."

We made it 58 months before HG heard of Chuck E Cheese.

She attached herself to John when he got home from work. She was riding around on his back, and he was trying to shed her for a minute so that he could change out of his work clothes. She said, “I’m stuck on you- I’m like a backpack!”

There is a pic from John’s Ole Miss graduation in our den. HG noticed him in his graduation stole and asked, “Why is Daddy dressed like a priest?”

After Dr. Seuss day at school, HG told me, “Cat In the Hat was not written by a cat.”

After a pillow fight in her bed with her daddy one night, I moved to clean up her animals. She stopped me with, “Except it’s my fault. I should clean it up.” Talk about stopping me in my tracks. I wish I could say that I’ve heard this reasoning again though…ha!

Another clean bill of dental health. She sure does not get her lack of dental anxiety from her mama. She just climbed up there and kicked back. Cool as a cucumber.2014-02-26 15.03.15 Teddy bear day at dance class with AMC and Riley2014-02-26 16.03.19 Making a Q at schoolQ class picWhat kind of evil/genius ice cream man pulls up to a school right at dismissal time on a Friday afternoon??? Start of Spring Break

Spring Break 2014 is here! Helen Grace got out of school at noon on Friday, and she asked to go to lunch at Huey’s downtown. Random but fun, and of course, Spiffer, Granddaddy, and I were happy to oblige her request. After lunch, we asked if she wanted to go next door to see the Peabody ducks, but she said no, she’d seen them before, and wanted to see the river. Ha! We drove over to Tom Lee Park and spent a few minutes out by water before the chilly wind froze our ears and fingers! What a beautiful start to Spring Break.

Snow Day- Finally!

After DeSoto County schools were out for a few snow days, we were SO EXCITED when it finally snowed enough- and on a school day- for Memphis schools to close (last Monday). North Shelby County got a lot of good snow, but we really only got a lot of crunchy ice. We’ll take what we can get though! John had to fly out that morning for a business trip, and thankfully, he was able to make it to the airport without a problem. Helen Grace and I played in the icy snow for a little bit (too wet and too little to really even make snowballs) and then enjoyed a lazy day in our pj’s, and Spiffer and Granddaddy ventured out to come eat dinner with us. A nice, slow, and cuddly start to the week.

School was also cancelled on Tuesday due to the northern areas still being iced in, but Mama had to go back to work so HG had a Spiffer/GD day.
