As many times as HG has been to the Grove, we’ve never taken her into the stadium for a game. We were waiting for her attention span to catch up and for her fear of loud noises to diminish, so finally, we thought she (and her social calendar) were ready to make Ole Miss football a priority. We got tickets to the Vandy game, which was homecoming, on October 14th. We figured, if anything, the halftime show would keep her happy.
It was a blistering hot day with kick off at 2:00 p.m. We got there around 11:00 a.m. and were able to visit with Worth at his fraternity house. (That was fun to see HG wide eyed at that experience! And she learned about homecoming floats as we passed them on the way there too.) We showed her around the business school where John and I met. Then, we went to the Grove and visited with our family and the Harrises. It was quickly time for the Walk of Champions, where we found a very nice lady who let HG get right up front (but she was way timid for some reason). Afterward, HG said, “Mama, they don’t say the right words to Hotty Toddy. Those must be the grown up words.” Hahaha! Then, we went to the DG house for a reception, and HG was recognized everywhere she went. She thought she was a celebrity! And finally, we headed into the stadium for the game.
Helen Grace did the landshark proudly, appropriately, and like a champ; shook her pom pons; and listened intently to all of our lessons on football. She was fascinated with the medical pop up tent and said that’s what she would do when she’s a physical therapist one day. When I asked her what she remembered most, she said she got to see the football players really up close, and she realized the quarterback was named Shea like mama. (“Why do they spell it like ‘She-ah’?”)
We stayed into the third quarter, found our Jackson cousins, and then finally pulled her out of there around 6 p.m. It was time to get home to Cressey and relieve Spiffer and Granddaddy. On the way to the car, John and I showed her the doorknob, which she acted like was a little anticlimactic. But today when we were back in town, I heard her tell her friend she’d been ‘door knobbed,’ so I guess she thought her ole parents were cool after all!
